This Is What It Means If You See A Woman With An Engagement Ring On Her Pinky

Why wait for someone else to put a ring on it when you can do it yourself?

Self-love is often a solo journey, but it is very important. If people don’t take the time to love themselves, then they are not going to have the energy to give to other people.

That’s the idea behind the Self Love Pinky Ring, a new jewelry concept dreamed up by Melody Godfred and Samira Far of Fred + Far. Because they have seen too many people ignore their own needs and push through discomfort nonetheless.

The ring is meant to remind women to love themselves – and to take time out of their busy lives to actively nurture this love. Godfred got the idea last year when she noticed that her own commitment to herself was lacking.

“By early 2015, I had hit every milestone: education, career, marriage, mortgage, motherhood,” Godfred wrote on the company’s website. “But with each one my commitment to others grew, while my connection with myself dissipated. What made me happy? Who was I after all the labels were stripped away? So I decided to wear a new ring on a new finger.”

Godfred explained, during an interview with Mental Scoops, the reasoning behind the rings and why she believes they can be so powerful for women out there.

“I chose to create the ring for my pinky because it is a finger I’ve never worn a ring on before. It is as overlooked as women can be in their own lives. It felt very powerful to me to take a traditional symbol of commitment to someone else (big, bold engagement rings) and say, ‘This time, I’m choosing myself.’ I still wear my engagement ring proudly, and these two rings are not mutually exclusive. Because loving yourself, makes you better able to love someone else.”

Fred and Far has been featured in magazines like Vogue, Cosmo, Forbes, Glamour, Elle, and Elite Daily, and has been purchased by thousands of women all over the world. The brand messaging is what customers hold onto: it’s what women (and some men) have felt inspired by. They use their ring as a reminder to choose themselves, every day.

Melody Godfred is not just a founder, she is also a self-love philosopher and an author of the book, “The ABCs of Self Love.” Her goals and passions have found their way into every part of her personal and professional life. According to their website, the “one-of-a-kind pinky ring” features “a 1.5 carat created white sapphire that that represents your commitment to YOU.” The description continues, “While an engagement ring symbolizes your commitment to another, the Self Love Pinky Ring™ represents your commitment to yourself and serves as a daily reminder to practice self-love and self-care. Each ring comes with our pinky promise pledge card so you can sign your name and make your commitment official.”

The gem in the self-love pinky ring is a lab-created white sapphire. “Lab-created stones are biologically and visually identical to natural stones, only more flawless,” the website articulates. “They represent the power of creation, are conflict-free, and are much kinder to the environment. The lab-created white sapphire is our original stone, classic style, and most popular product. It is known for evoking clarity in addition to fueling intuition, wisdom, and strength of spirit. It also reveals one’s talents and inspires both integrity as well as positive thinking. Sapphire is also the September birthstone.”
