American music legend Charlie Daniels died earlier this month at the age of 83. His hit song “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” is still just as popular today as it was in 1979. The southern rock star died at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennesse, where doctors determined the cause of death to be a hemorrhagic stroke.

Daniels’ wife Hazel, to whom he was married for nearly 56 years, had her spirits lifted this week when she received a letter from President Trump.

On Monday, his widow and their only child, Charlie Daniels Jr., took over the late Daniels’ official Instagram account to share a very personal letter addressed to Hazel from President Donald Trump himself.

The letter begins, “Dear Hazel, I was saddened to learn of the loss of your beloved husband, Charlie, and send my deepest condolences.”

He continues on to call the country icon a “true American patriot,” and proclaimed that his music will be “celebrated for generations.”

“He inspired many Americans with his unyielding support of our brave men and women in uniform,” Trump continued. “Your husband reminded us that we must honor those who have sacrificed so much to defend our freedoms. Our great Nation depends on artists like Charlie who promote love of country. He will be greatly missed.”

Trump also acknowledged his own wife, First Lady Melania Trump, “Durning this difficult time, the First Lady and I send our prayers to you, your family, and all who loved Charlie. May his music continue to reverberate in the hearts of countless Americans.”

Charlie Daniels was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016 and a Grand Ole Opry member since 2008. His gospel albums won him a Dove Award in 1995 and again in 1997 and a Grammy Award for best country vocal performance.
