So far 2020 has been a crazy year full of unexpected twists and turns. Not only have we had to deal with the coronavirus and damage it has caused to our economy, but also killer Asian hornets that have made their way to the United States.
Well, a new threat has emerged in our food! A woman claims to have found an egg sac full of deadly spiders in a bunch of bananas she had recently purchased from a grocery store.
Melanie Price from Wadebridge, England told The Sun that she had just purchased the fruit from a Tesco when she noticed the spiders and grabbed her husband and small children and ran outside. While no one was hurt, the home did need to be sealed and fumigated for two weeks to make sure the creepy crawlies were good and dead.
The spiders were identified as one of the most venomous in the world, Brazilian wandering spiders. One bite, if left untreated, can be deadly to humans, especially children.
Price told reporters at The Sun, “They take two hours to kill a human. It was terrifying. We had to make sure the kids were safe, that comes above anything. It was a hard 48 hours, I can assure you.”
Pest controllers have taken actions necessary to make sure none of the spiders are still living in the area.
“We have strict controls to ensure all our bananas are washed and inspected prior to packing. However, on extremely rare occasions, pests can avoid detection,” says a spokesperson from Tesco.
Is nothing safe anymore? Just be extra careful when buying fruits and veggies, especially those that get shipped here from other countries. Inspect and wash them thoroughly. This could have turned out a lot worse than it did.
