For big fans of college football, this week is what everyone has been waiting for.  It’s that certain time of year where the rankings don’t really matter, and no underdog should be underestimated.

It’s rivalry week, and all bets are off.

However, this season will be like no other because one of the longest-standing grudge matches in all of college football will be played without one of the teams’ head coaches.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban has tested positive for COVID-19 just days before the Iron Bowl.

Team physician Dr. Jimmy Robinson and head trainer Jeff Allen said in a joint statement that the positive test came Wednesday morning.

“He has very mild symptoms, so this test will not be categorized as a potential false positive,” the statement said. “He will follow all appropriate guidelines and isolate at home.”

The Crimson Tide is set to face its biggest rival Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium without the 69-year-old, six-time national champion coach. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, a former head coach at USC and Washington, will oversee preparations within the football building and oversee the team on game day.

Saban tested positive once and negative twice earlier this year, and was eventually cleared to get back to work after the temporary scare.

Despite missing Saban on the sideline, the Alabama Crimson Tide is still a fan favorite in the matchup, against a struggling Auburn Tigers team.
