A Michigan couple was found dead on the floor of their apartment just before they were to share a meal together.

The young couple was found mysteriously dead in their Dundee, Michigan, apartment on Tuesday, October 18. When investigators arrived at the scene just after 1 a.m., they discovered bags of uneaten Taco Bell takeout near the bodies as well as drug paraphernalia and a pound of marijuana on the kitchen table.

There were no signs of trauma, foul play, or forced entry. The couple’s family says drugs could be a factor, but police still don’t know what happened.

A neighbor who stopped by their apartment around 9 p.m. believed Cameron Hulet, 28, and Courtney Hulet, 20, who were ultimately found on their side and facedown respectively, to be sleeping. When she checked in again three hours later and saw they hadn’t moved at all, she called the police.

“It’s really a puzzle,” Dundee Village Manager Dave Uhl said. “There is no indication as to what happened. It’s a mystery.”

Cameron’s mother, Cheryl Harris, says he and Courtney had not been doing well since their two young sons, a 4-month-old and 1-year-old, were put into foster care.

“It was devastating to them,” she says. “They called me bawling their eyes out.”

Harris said she last spoke to her son on Sunday night, two days before his death. Although he and Courtney were “extremely depressed,” Harris says she can’t imagine they would hurt themselves.

Cameron’s family declined to specify why the children may have been removed. Child services would not release the cases’ information, though local media reports show Cameron had a criminal history.

Authorities believe drugs are a probable cause (drug paraphernalia was found inside the apartment and a pound of marijuana was found on the table, seemingly being divided up for sale), but have not yet been able to officially confirm the couple’s cause of death. There are no signs of trauma or a break-in that would’ve indicated foul play.

Cameron Hulet has a criminal record dating back 10 years which includes charges of possession of marijuana, assault and driving offenses, according to the Monroe News.
