What comes next for the Republican Party is anybody’s guess in 2021, as the organization continues to keep tabs on the unwieldy power of the far-right MAGA movement.
Donald Trump has not officially announced any future political plans as of yet, but he has certainly made it seem likely that he’ll be running for office yet again, or, at the very least, that he’ll be active in the governmental spectrum as the 2024 election begins to ramp up.
But this is troubling for some within the GOP who have long maintained that Trump was an aberration of conservatism.
Now, at least one prominent member of the party is suggesting that the organization should actively work to prevent Trump from running again in the next election.
House Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) said Monday it is unlikely that former President Donald Trump will serve as the Republican nominee for president in 2024.
“I don’t think that that’s going to happen,” Cheney told the Washington Examiner. “And I think it’s important that it not happen, given what he did.”
Cheney, one of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump on the charge of inciting a riot on January 6, said she “certainly would never vote for a Democrat” and stated she does not believe Trump “should be president again.”
When asked by the New York Post if she would consider a run for president in 2024, Cheney said, “I’m not ruling anything in or out — I’ve been here a long time.”
Trump has repeatedly insisted that he still holds sway over the party, thanks to the rabid and enormous MAGA base, and is undoubtedly going to respond to Cheney’s comments in the coming days.
