It was only a few decades ago that the nation being to feel the effects of political correctness and begin to wonder just how far that vein of thought would go. Our answer, it seems, is pretty darn far.
Political correctness, much like drinking and anger, functions properly in moderation, for most people. There were certainly some pockets of our society that needed adjusting, particularly in pop culture where stereotypes have long been exacerbated by the mainstream media, Hollywood, and others.
But there’s a line, and this new “woke” bend has even longtime liberals scratching their heads and blaming the Democrats’ electoral troubles on it.
The latest pushback came from Democratic strategist James Carville during an appearance on PBS’ News Hour.
“[W]hat went wrong is just stupid wokeness,” he declared. “Don’t just look at Virginia and New Jersey. Look at Long Island, look at Buffalo, look at Minneapolis, even look at Seattle, Wash. I mean, this ‘defund the police’ lunacy, this take Abraham Lincoln’s name off of schools. I mean that — people see that.”
“It’s just really — has a suppressive effect all across the country on Democrats. Some of these people need to go to a ‘woke’ detox center or something,” Carville continued. “They’re expressing a language that people just don’t use, and there’s backlash and a frustration at that.”
This is far from the first time that Carville has railed against the “woke” sect of the Democratic Party, and given the way that things on the left are heading, it won’t likely be his last either.
