These big, bada*s, war machines can do a lot! and apparently turn at some insanely high speeds.
The basics.. Aircraft carriers are warships (duh). They are airbases on water. In the United States Navy the ships consist of hull classification symbols (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion)) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion)) — bet you didn’t know we had so many different kinds. None of this includes the amphibious warfare ships which actually can operate as carriers.
The first aircraft carrier commissioned in the United States Navy was the USS Langley (classified as CV-1) on March 20th, 1922.
The Cold War actually led to new developments in the U.S. carrier fleet. This started with the addition of the Midway-class and the Saipan-class with the first class of “supercarriers” being born in the Forrestal-class.
