Did you know there are rare dollar bills worth a lot of money?

The history of money is one of the most interesting and fascinating stories there is in the world. Have you ever wondered how long the coins or banknotes in your pocket have been around? Because chances are, there’s a $1 bill that’s worth thousands and you just don’t even know it yet!

And before you spend that $1 bill in your wallet, do a little research. You may be sitting on a lot more cash than you think.

Coin and currency collectors in the US are willing to pay up to $150,000 in search of rare $1 bills with a particular printing error from the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

Two batches of $1 bills were printed, one in 2014 and another in 2016, that feature this particular error, and the bills went into circulation before the mistake was found.

In November 2014, the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing sent a request to its Washington DC facility to print a batch of dollar bills. In July 2016, the exact same request was sent to the Fort Worth facility.

This miscommunication resulted in dollars printed with duplicate serial numbers, technically counterfeiting their currency. Typically, every bill in circulation has a unique serial number to identify it.

Neither misprint was caught by the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and now currency collectors are clamoring to find matching pairs of dollar bills with these duplicate serial numbers.

In total, there are 6.4 million pairs of $1 bills with matching serial numbers. While that may seem like a lot, billions of dollars are in circulation, and to date, only nine pairs have been matched.

There are three things you need to know to identify the misprinted bills that could be worth a small fortune:

  • The Series date located near the photograph of George Washington must-read “Series 2013”
  • The bill must have a “B” Federal Reserve Seal above the serial number
  • The serial number must end with a star (*) and fall between B00000001* – B00250000* or B03200001*-B09600000*

Although the serial numbers are not completely random, like a lottery drawing, they do have random characteristics that make it possible that you have an extremely valuable dollar in your pocket right now.

CoolSerialNumbers.com published an entire list of the serial numbers on dollar bills that they’re willing to pay tons of money to obtain. They will hand over hundreds and sometimes even thousands for a dollar bill with the right serial number.

The website has published its “want list” which you can download by visiting their site.

What are some things they’re looking for?

  • 7 in a row of the same number like 29999999
  • Super radars like 01111110, 10000001, or 80000008
  • Repeaters like 67676767
  • Double quads like 11110000
  • 0 and 9 binaries like 00090000
  • 1 and 8 binaries like 81188118
  • And more!

In addition to a want list, the collectors of the website also have a sale list with many one-dollar bills going for as high as $1,250. They also list several $2, $5, $10, $20, and $50 bills for much more than their face value.

Additionally, there are many sellers on eBay selling some of their bills with unique serial numbers. These ones might not be going for thousands, but not too long ago, a $1 bill was listed for $86 for having the serial number 67676767, and another was going for $66.66 for having the number 00023000. So if your dollar bills aren’t worthy of collector sites, you can try listing them on eBay. Hey, it can’t hurt!

In addition to eBay, “currency auction houses are also good, especially for the more valuable notes. My favorites are Heritage Auctions and Lyn Knight Auctions,” says Dave Undis, the head collector at CoolSerialNumbers.com.
