It was just days ago that Brian Laundrie’s remains were discovered in a previously flooded portion of the vast Carlton Reserve, ending the search for the only person of interest in the murder of Gabby Petito.
Well, some of Brian Laundrie’s remains. Authorities revealed that the fugitive was reduced to “partial” remains, including a “fragment” of his skill and enough teeth to use dental records to identify him.
But there apparently wasn’t enough of Laundrie left to yet determine a cause of death.
Brian Laundrie’s remains were sent to an anthropologist “for further evaluation” after autopsy results came back inconclusive, the family’s attorney said.
“No manner or cause of death was determined,” the lawyer, Steven Bertolino, said in a statement to NBC News.
Bertolino said he was not given a timeline for when the anthropologist will conclude the evaluation of Laundrie’s remains, which he said will ultimately be cremated.
Laundrie disappeared while going “hiking” just hours before the discovery of fiancée Gabby Petito’s body in Bridger-Teton National Forest, a few hundred feet from a location where the two had camped during a cross-country road trip some weeks before.
Upon Laundrie’s return to Florida, sans Gabby, both he and his parents blatantly refused to cooperate with authorities who were investigating her then-disappearance, which painted quite the target on he and his parents’ back, at least in the court of public opinion.
A notebook belonging to Laundrie was discovered near the remains, and authorities are hopeful that it can be salvaged for clues to Gabby’s demise.
