For years on end, we all believed that the Democrats would be the first ti implode their party. Their infighting was incredibly public, at least in terms of how infighting usually goes, and it was very easy to see the seams from which they were tearing apart.
But these days, after the whole January 6th thing, the stakes are higher than ever in the GOP as well, with the old guard Republicans taking aim at the MAGA movement is ever-more pointed ways.
This week, hard lines were drawn in the sand out in Wyoming.
Embattled Rep. Liz Cheney is betting on figures from the fading Republican establishment to help her win re-election — setting up a clash between two GOP former presidents.
Cheney (R-Wyo.), who has been sidelined by House Republican leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy for voting to impeach President Donald Trump, has invited President George W. Bush to hold a fundraiser for her next month in Dallas, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Trump is backing her challenger Harriet Hageman in the 2022 Republican primary for Wyoming’s sole House seat.
In his endorsement of Hageman earlier this month, Trump referred to Cheney as a “warmonger and disloyal Republican.”
Trump has had mixed success with his post-presidency endorsements, but Cheney’s position as a lightning rod of the Republican Party makes this the race to watch.
