One of ‘Loony Tunes’ most famous characters, Elmer Fudd, is losing his signature prop on the rebooted series on HBO Max. Instead of having his trusty shotgun, the producers have decided to give him a scythe.
This change was confirmed this weekend as people noticed the new animated series did not feature any firearms at all, even Yosemite Sam had lost his pistols. One of the executive producers for the show said, “We’re not doing guns.” The show will be completely gun-less going forward but characters still have other lethal weapons at their disposal, which sort of sends a mixed message.
Yosemite Sam will now be packing a grass hook and he will still have access to dangerous artillery in the never-ending pursuit of Bugs Bunny such as dynamite and other ACME-certified products.
A lot of people are “outraged” over this change, as you can imagine, accusing Warner Bros. and HBO of going soft to appease this generation’s politically correct sensibilities especially as it pertains to gun violence.
It does seem a bit extreme to take away Elmer and Yosemite’s guns, they are only cartoons after all, while still depicting just as much verve and explicit violence with explosives and other handheld weapons.
How about instead of taking away guns while teaching the next generation that other tools and household items can be just as deadly, we teach them proper gun control. Firearm safety could save countless lives and learning that responsibility early on can help keep your family safe and protected.
Then maybe we can watch cartoons and enjoy them for what they are… cartoons.
