The condition of the economy has deteriorated during global lockdowns but only when it started to affect the uber elite and rich did the powers that be started to get worried.
In a surprising new twist, the World Health Organization has done a total 180 on their stance on lockdowns. Dr. David, who has been the voice for the organization on COVID-19 said, “We really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method.”
“Lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never belittle,” said the doctor, “and that is making poor people an awful to poorer.”
“We in the World Health Organisation do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Dr. Nabarro added.“The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”
This leaves Democratic governors in a conundrum since they have used lockdowns to “control” the virus. Those lockdowns have destroyed businesses in cities like New York.
Nabarro called out the lockdowns’ economic destruction saying, “Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays.”
“Look what’s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world,” he continued. “Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”
The announcement from the World Health Organization came after 12,000 of the world’s top experts signed the Great Barrington Declaration which calls for an end to lockdowns and a return to normal life for those less at risk.
The declaration states, “As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.”
Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.
The left, of course, did not like this idea at all because they will lose the control they have over citizens. Left-wing sites like Mother Jones and The Guardian all attacked the Declaration but really will have no choice but to comply since the World Health Organization is calling for an end to lockdowns.
