Some of us have probably been regaled with a mortifying tattoo-gone-wrong tale, like the time Ariana Grande‘s Japanese ink literally translated to ‘seven wheels’ (a traditional charcoal grill), or when a devoted Patrick Gower fan had the reporter’s face tattooed on his body with a glaring grammatical error.
And now, a woman from the Australian state of Queensland has discovered that her seemingly innocuous ink actually has a secret meaning, and it’s far more fruity than she intended.
Brittany Lewin was mortified to discover the upside-down pineapple inked on her outer wrist is actually a symbol used by swingers to identify one another in public – implying they are searching for a swinging soiree.
In the TikTok video, which has since bubbled up again, Lewin shares a conversation between her and a friend about a new tattoo she’d gotten.
“Is that an upside-down pineapple?” her friend texted her.
“Hahah not when my arm is down,” Lewin answered.
Lewin sent her friend a photo of her new tattoo but wasn’t prepared for the response her friend gave her.
“It’s still going to make me giggle,” her friend wrote. “I only just found out what an upside down pineapple means.”
Lewin was confused.
“Wait what? Googling haha,” she wrote. She then shared her search, which showed that an upside down pineapple tattoo isn’t exactly for fruit lovers.
“Pineapples are a secret sign used by swingers to identify each other in public,” the search result states.
“An upside down pineapple means a person is in search of a swinger party,” it continues.
“When you realize you’ve made a mistake,” Lewin wrote in the video’s text overlay. She added that she unknowingly has been posting videos of her new tattoo on her Instagram Stories “daily.”
Folks online were cracking up at Lewin’s mistake.
“Yep, everytime I see it I was thinking to myself ‘does she know?'” one commenter admitted.
“Freakin hilarious,” another commenter wrote.
“What was your reasoning behind getting that tattoo then? I’m dying here,” another person wrote.
“I f—ing have an upside down pineapple too and people keep sending me these kinds of TikToks and I’m just like I’m not, stop,” one commenter wrote.
“Not mine being three times the size of yours,” someone else shared. “Same arm, same area. I know NOW but I don’t care.”
“Still cute as tattoo. I have a pineapple tattoo on my foot,” another person added.
Lewin’s TikTok video has received tens of thousands of views and has spread from Australia to America. Followers from across the world have shared comments, including one person who wrote: “‘I’ve thought this every video I’ve seen of you. I just thought each to their own.”
