Scientists Are Concerned About Monster Hybrid Embryos

There are just some lines that you don’t cross, particularly when it comes to messing with the human animal.

You see, we are creatures of sentience – something nearly unique on our planet, with the appearance of self-awareness existing in a number of animals. As far as high-level intelligence, (at least by human standards), we really only seem to assign that sort of IQ to certain species of primates and dolphins.

And so, as sentient beings, we have an innate belief that our genetic makeup is sacred, and should not be tampered with in the name of science.

That is precisely why some are growing concerned over the latest news from California.

For the first time, scientists have created embryos that are a mix of human and monkey cells.

The embryos, described Thursday in the journal Cell, were created in part to try to find new ways to produce organs for people who need transplants, said the international team of scientists who collaborated in the work. But the research raises a variety of concerns.

Those who worry about the ethical ramifications of the experiment loudly protested.

“My first question is: Why?” said Kirstin Matthews, a fellow for science and technology at Rice University’s Baker Institute. “I think the public is going to be concerned, and I am as well, that we’re just kind of pushing forward with science without having a proper conversation about what we should or should not do.”

The scientists involved have stated clearly that they have no desire to bring any new, half-man creature into the world, describing such a thing as “a monster”.
