Nine Americans were shot to death Monday after their convoy came under fire in broad daylight. Three women and at least six children were living in a faith-based community in northern Mexico when they were murdered by gunmen that are believed to be affiliated with drug cartels.

Mexicos top security official, Alfonso Durazo, confirmed these deaths also adding that six more children had been wounded in the ambush and one child is still said to be missing, possibly kidnapped by the attackers.

Relatives of the victims live in the religious community of La Mora. They say the group was traveling in a convoy of SUVs when they were attacked. Mexicos top security officials say they may have been mistaken for rival gangs.

President Trump called out these monsters on Twitter and offered help to Mexico should they need it.

“A wonderful family and friends from Utah got caught between two vicious drug cartels, who were shooting at each other, with the result being many great American people killed, including young children, and some missing. If Mexico needs or requests help in cleaning out these monsters, the United States stands ready, willing & able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue, but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army!”
In a statement from the U.S. Stated Department, they say, “The safety and welfare of U.S. citizens abroad is among the Department of State’s top priorities. When a U.S. citizen is missing or passes away overseas, we engage with local officials at multiple levels and provide all appropriate consular assistance.”
