Before traveling to the games Japan newspapers reported that First Lady Jill Biden would be holding talks with Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and other senior officials inside the government during her trip to the Olympic games.
The USA media didn’t report that Biden would meet with government officials and only focused on her plans to attend the Olympics.
During her trip to Japan, Biden did hold meetings with the prime minister, senior officials, and Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace.
There has been no word from the Biden administration informing the public what Jill Biden discussed with the Prime Minister and his officials.
On July 23 the White House confirmed that First Lady Jill Biden is headed to Japan for the Olympics but will also be playing president.
“First Lady Jill Biden will travel to the Opening Ceremony of the 2021 Olympic Summer Games,” the White House said.
The First Lady will also be holding an official meeting with Japan’s Prime minister Yoshihide Suga and other senior officials inside the government.
the Japanese Newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the meeting with Biden “sends a message of importance of the relationship with Japan.”
From the Japanese Newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun:
The Japanese and U.S. governments are making arrangements for a visit to Japan by U.S. first lady Jill Biden that would coincide with the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on July 23, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.
The two sides are looking into having the first lady attend the opening ceremony as well as meet with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and other officials during her stay, according to sources.
If anyone other than Joe is going to be at a diplomatic meeting it should (oh this hurts to say) be Kamala because she is the Vice President; Jill is stepping way outside of her capacity.
The last First Lady to attend the opening ceremony for the Olympics was Michelle Obama and even she just attended as the first lady.
.@JoeBiden: "You know, there's that great philosopher, and he talked about, Jill puts notes up on my mirror when she wants me to, where I shave, to get messages across to me, and there's a philosopher who once said 'faith sees best in the dark.' Kierkegaard said that." pic.twitter.com/ZsDaK25qUJ
