A traditional 21-gun salute at the University of Virginia has been canceled and some people are not happy about it. Jim Ryan, UVA President, claimed that the salute is just ‘too scary’ and would disrupt classes.
Ryan’s reasons for canceling the event were, “One is that it would be disruptive to classes and two, unfortunately with gun violence in the U.S., there was some concern that we would cause a panic if someone heard gunshots on grounds.”
They made it quite clear that they would not budge on the decision and nothing would change their mind. Brian Coy, a UVA spokesman, commented that the college “hears and respects the concerns raised by members of the community.” However, it would appear that they simply do not care about the community’s concerns.
This is certainly a slap in the face to every veteran that fought for our country. We are supposed to be the home of the free, because of those brave individuals that risked their lives. Yet universities like this one would rather be politically correct than honoring those that protect our freedom.
Law Enforcement Today reports:
Jay Levine is a veteran who spoke to local media outlets and who is ripping mad about the decision. The veteran went through the ROTC program at UVA. He said the 21-gun salute is the ultimate salute to those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
He tells media outlets he’s planning on writing to UVA about his concerns, and hopes other veterans will take action as well.
Lavine had this to say, “I am very disillusioned, very upset, and very surprised that they would make such a decision. Freedom isn’t free. There’s a cost and that cost is born by the veterans and the families of those veterans.”
What has America come to when people are too scared to celebrate those who made America what it is today?
