Elon Musk has once again expressed his concerns over woke artificial intelligence and its potential to pose a threat to mankind, as reported by The Information on Monday. According to the report, Musk is actively seeking out top artificial intelligence researchers in order to form a new research lab that will develop an alternative to ChatGPT, the first AI tool to reach mainstream audiences.
Musk believes that ChatGPT is an example of “training AI to be woke,” and is therefore a serious danger. In his efforts to combat this threat, he is recruiting top researcher Igor Babuschkin to help lead the effort.
As one of the pioneers in the field of AI, Musk has repeatedly criticized ChatGPT and the company that created it, OpenAI, which he co-founded. He has expressed concerns over the direction that the company has taken and it’s potential to train AI to lie.
“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk warned shortly after ChatGPT launched when numerous problems with the tool were first noted. He also criticized OpenAI for its shift from an open-source, non-profit company to a closed-source, maximum-profit company that is effectively controlled by Microsoft, something that he says was not his intention.

At the start of the week, Musk expressed his concerns over AGI (artificial general intelligence) existential angst, but also expressed his preference for being alive now to witness AGI than being alive in the past and not. Earlier this month, he warned that unrestricted development of AI poses a significant threat to the existence of humanity.
During a speech in Dubai, Musk emphasized the importance of regulating AI safety, stating that we need to think of any technology which is potentially a risk to people, like cars, planes, or medicine, and have regulatory bodies oversee their safety. He believes that AI is an even bigger risk to society than these other technologies, and therefore, requires regulatory oversight.
Musk’s concerns about AI and its potential for misuse are not unfounded. With AI becoming increasingly sophisticated and prevalent in our daily lives, there are concerns about the ethics of AI decision-making, as well as its potential to be used for nefarious purposes. As such, it is important that researchers and developers take steps to ensure that AI is developed in a responsible and ethical manner and that proper regulatory oversight is put in place to prevent the misuse of this powerful technology.
