For supporters of Donald Trump, the 2020 election was a sham. The former President has repeatedly suggested that something went awry during that contest, whether it be malfeasance by the software company who provided the voting machines to local governments, or Democratic lawmakers stacking the deck in their favor with illegal ballot initiatives.
Whatever happened, Trump is convinced that it was done to prevent him from remaining in office, and his surrogates are now working up new ways to prove it.
For instance, in Arizona, where an audit continues today to reassess the balloting in the state’s most populous county.
As far as getting Trump back in office goes, most believe that he’ll have to wait his turn and try again in 2024.
However, Sydney Powell has a different, more direct idea.
Attorney Sidney Powell, who is being sued by Dominion Voting Systems for spreading allegedly defamatory claims about the 2020 election, insisted on Saturday former President Donald Trump could “simply be reinstated” as president and fill the rest of President Joe Biden’s term.
Powell’s remarks were made at a right-wing conference in Dallas on Saturday called the “For God & Country Patriot Roundup,” which also featured retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser who has echoed the former president’s claims of widespread voter fraud in the November election, as a guest speaker.
“There are cases where elections have been overturned, but there’s never been one at the presidential level, which everybody will jump to point out, that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done,” Powell said, earning loud applause from an audience. “It should be that he can simply be reinstated, that a new inauguration date is set.”
Of course, Powell and her fellow pro-Trump lawyers have yet to find a judge willing to entertain their evidence of wrongdoing in the 2020 election, and it’s not likely that Powell’s simple suggestion is going to change too many minds
