Back in 2018, Walmart launched a bold anti-racism initiative designed to educate company executives and salaried managers about the alleged “white supremacy system” that European whites have historically used to maintain power. This critical race theory training, which is only now coming to light thanks to a whistleblower who shared resources with the media, urges managers and leaders to remember that “white is not right,” but that “white can do right.”

CEO Doug McMillon introduced the training program, led by North Carolina’s Racial Equity Institute, as a mandatory course for salaried employees and executives, with a recommendation for hourly workers to participate. The leaked documents published by City Journal claim that the “white supremacy system” was intentionally created by white Europeans to “assign and maintain white skin access to power and privilege.”

According to the training, white people in America have experienced “racist conditioning,” which leads them to practice “white supremacy”—the belief that white people and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions are superior to those of People of Color. Yet, despite Walmart’s apparent commitment to inclusivity and diversity, the company’s leadership does not reflect this. Only one of Walmart’s nine top executives is non-white, Global Chief Technology Officer Suresh Kumar and the vast majority of its 40 vice presidents are white.

The implications of this lack of diversity are significant. Walmart’s leaders receive enormous salaries; one report suggests that the top six executives earned a combined $112 million, excluding additional perks and benefits. Walmart’s anti-racism training aims to identify a psychological profile for whiteness and address it through “white anti-racist development.” The training discusses how whites are guilty of “white privilege” since they are born into a system that elevates them while suppressing people of color.

Furthermore, the training asserts that whites have “internalized racial superiority” and falsely believe their comfort, wealth, privilege, and success come from merit and hard work instead of their whiteness. The “white supremacy culture” that purportedly oppresses non-whites encompasses qualities such as “individualism,” “objectivity,” “paternalism,” “defensiveness,” “power hoarding,” “right to comfort,” and “worship of the written word.” These qualities supposedly work together to “promote white supremacy thinking” and are damaging to both people of color and white individuals.

Walmart’s program encourages white people to examine their biases and recognize the advantages that whiteness has provided them in life. It also urges them to move toward “collective action” so that “white can do right.” The training promotes the development of a new “anti-racist identity” for white individuals as they ascend the “ladder of empowerment for white people.”

The question remains, however: is Walmart’s approach to addressing systemic racism truly effective? Is it fair to categorize all white individuals as inherently privileged and supremacist, or should the focus be on promoting genuine equality and understanding between all races? It’s crucial to consider these questions as we strive for a more just and equitable society.
