America is a nation of freedom and equality, first and foremost. This is the land where “all are created equal” and the place where liberty and justice are for all, not some.
But there is an ugly and unforgivable current of white supremacy still lurking in our shadows, even in the year 2021, and the current political division that we face has become prime fodder for these cretins. They see this divide as a slippery slope for some politically active individuals, and they hope to turn their angst into hate.
That is why racism must be confronted at every turn in the United States, and Philadelphians are heeding the call.
Masked white supremacists who marched outside Philadelphia City Hall over the Fourth of July weekend ran away when pedestrians confronted them, using smoke bombs to obscure their retreat, authorities said Monday.
About 200 members of the group Patriot Front descended on the city’s downtown Saturday night chanting “reclaim America” and saying the presidential election had been stolen, Philadelphia police spokeswoman Tanya Little said.
The actions of the group were utterly cowardly, and rightly so.
Police Officer Michael Crum told WPVI-TV that Patriot Front members felt threatened and “literally ran away from the people of Philadelphia.”
As they did, Little said, they threw what appeared to smoke bombs “to cover their retreat as they fled.”
And while this may feel like a small victory, especially on a weekend so steeped in patriotism and love of country, we must recognize that these imbecilic ne’er-do-wells have only gone back underground, and will likely need to be exterminated again in the not-so-distant future.
