In the waning days of his first term as President, Donald Trump made it very clear that he was unsatisfied with the results of the 2020 election. In fact, he was much more vitriolic than that, suggesting on numerous occasions that the contest was “stolen” from him, or that it was otherwise “rigged”, perhaps even through the illicit use of Dominion-branded voting machines.
This led to a number of litigious attempts to draw attention to these purported problems, almost all of which have failed in court.
In Arizona, there is but one strand of the “stop the steal” movement still active, but even the Republicans of The Copper State are now trying to put an end to it.
The Republican-dominated Maricopa County Board of Supervisors on Monday called for an end to the audit of the election results. The Republican-led Arizona state Senate has ordered a full-hand recount and audit of the ballots and voting machines in Maricopa County, the state’s most populous county, despite that it will not change the outcome of the presidential election.
They also unanimously agreed to send a forceful response to claims made last week by Arizona’s Republican Senate President Karen Fann, who wrote to the board of supervisors last week alleging the county was not complying with legislative subpoenas, didn’t properly secure the chain of custody of ballots and deleted data.
And they weren’t mincing their words.
“It’s time to end this. For the good of the Senate, for the good of the Country and for the good of the Democratic institutions that define us as Americans,” the supervisors and other elected officials said in a letter to Fann.
The GOP Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, Jack Sellers, went even further, calling the process a “sham” and suggesting that the group auditing the results should be prepared to defend their findings in a court of law.
