The Republican Party is beginning to cleave in 2021, fueled by an increasingly disparate base who have been forced to either align themselves with Donald Trump or get lost.
For the most part, the Trump team appears to be running the show, sailing with the wind at their back ever since The Don started making overt suggestions that he would soon be running for President again.
But those who oppose the continuation of the figurative Trump bloodline within the GOP have been extremely vocal in their concerns over the direction of the party as a whole and what exactly we witnessed on January 6th.
We can count Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney among them.
A combative Rep. Liz Cheney lashed out at leaders of her own Republican Party late Tuesday, taking to the House floor on the eve of her near-certain ouster from a leadership post to warn that former President Donald Trump and his GOP supporters are threatening to “undermine our democracy.”
In an abruptly announced evening appearance in a nearly empty House chamber, Cheney, R-Wyo., cast herself as a defender of the Constitution. Her four-minute speech also served notice that she had no intention of backing down in her battle against a former president who has retained loyalty among many GOP lawmakers and voters, even as it leaves her once-promising political career in question.
She did not mince her words.
“Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar,” she said, adding, “I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”
Cheney is but one of a shrinking number of congressional Republicans who is willing to speak ill of President Trump or the MAGA Movement that he held sway over, and there is almost no doubt that she’ll be paying a heavy political price for this.
