A single mother’s six-year-old daughter had a moment of ungratefulness that she took as an opportunity to teach her a very valuable lesson.
Parents from across the country have applauded Haley Hassell for her innovative method to teach her daughter, Presleigh, a valuable lesson. Haley had posted about the incident on Facebook and garnered thousands of likes.
Haley uploaded a ‘long mom rant’ on Facebook, explaining that her daughter Presleigh had asked for the popular ‘LOL pencil box’ but changed her mind, tossing it in the garbage.

Haley drove to three different stores to get her daughter Presleigh the coveted LOL Doll pencil case she’d been asking for. Presleigh was a bit nervous about starting first grade, so Haley thought this would be a nice way to help her feel better about this big step! But when she got home and presented the pencil case to Presleigh, her daughter’s reaction was not what she was expecting.
Instead of being excited about the pencil case, Presleigh yelled that it was stupid and she didn’t want it anymore!

“I have worked so hard to completely take care of financially on my own & make sure she always gets what she needs and then some. BUT I thought I had always taught her to be grateful & know how lucky she was but apparently sis needed a small wake up call!” she wrote.
So Haley did the only thing she could think to do – she went and grabbed a Ziploc bag, and told Presleigh that this would be her pencil case this year.
And she took it even further than that! Not only would Presleigh not be using the LOL pencil case Haley bought for her, they’d be finding a child who would appreciate it more and they would be giving it to them. You go, mom!

“SO before completely going Madea mad on my child I check myself and say, “okay that’s fine, let me go get the one you’re going to use”…came back with her new pencil box, which is the Ziploc bag. She lost her mind!”

She continued: “Suddenly the LOL Box she just trashed was good enough, and the Ziploc bag was horrible…but it’s too late for all that. I told her to get the LOL out of the trash, and we would be finding a child to give it to tomorrow..one whose mommy and daddies don’t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy.”
“I explained to her she’s not entitled to anything special, and she is taking for granted how lucky she is…” the single mom said. “So for now, she will be using a Ziploc bag & will personally be delivering the nice box to a child that could benefit from it. Maybe I overreact sometimes, but I would’ve done anything to have all the things she does as a child.”
The mother and daughter mailed the pencil case and a few other school supplies to a 5-year-old girl in Utah. “Presleigh thought that was really cool. She understood once we were shopping for other children,” Haley said. She thinks it gave her six-year-old “perspective.”
This mom refused to let her daughter be a brat. Hopefully, other parents will follow her example.
